Minnesota
Minerals Education Workshop
August 3, 4 & 5, 2010
The 2010 Minnesota Minerals
Education Workshop will be held
in the Twin Cities in August, 2010.
About the Workshop
The purpose of MMEW is to
promote awareness of the positive
contribution that mineral resources make to the Minnesota way
of life, by providing information
and materials for teachers related to mineral resources, including
geology,
exploration, development, extraction, uses, reclamation, conservation
and
economics.
The Workshop consists of a
day-long series of classroom
sessions prepared to Minnesota Science Standards followed by a day and
a
half-day of geology field trips and tours of mining operations. Topics
covered
include but are not limited to geology, rock and mineral
identification, and
mineland reclamation. Classes are taught by geologists, educators, and
mining
industry professionals.
Participants take home rock and mineral sample kits, audiovisual
materials,
classroom exercises, resource guides and information about the field
trip sites
and mining operations they tour.
Limited enrollment
To provide the best learning experience possible,
enrollment for the
workshop is limited. Note that this is a popular event, which fills
quickly.
Academic credit
Certification for contact credit is available to
participants who complete
all classroom sessions and field trips. Participants may also be
eligible to
earn undergraduate and graduate credit through a cooperating
university.
Additional course fees and work assignments for academic credit are
determined
by the host university.
Previous Workshop Locations
The workshop is held in a
different location each year so
that we may provide better access to participants statewide.
By holding
the workshop in different locations, we are also able to highlight Minnesota's
diverse
geology and offer tours of local mining activities.
